Over 200 guests gathered to celebrate Christmas at our annual Carols by Candlelight service last Sunday evening. Held each year in the run up to Christmas, the carol service recounts the Christmas story through bible readings and carols, as well as connecting it to a contemporary theme through a sermon. This year, Revd Graham Hunter focused on the theme of ‘Where the homeless find a home’ – considering the critical issue of homelessness facing our society, and the deeper sense of homelessness we all experience, and the home offered by God through Jesus’ birth at Christmas. A collection was taken to support the work of winter night shelter across London, and all donations given during the service were matched by the church. Over £1,000 was raised.
We also enjoyed choir performance from St John the Baptist Primary School choir, the Sing For A Change social justice choir, and a scratch choir comprised of members of our church and community. The church was beautifully lit and atmospheric, and many guests stayed for mulled wine, mince pies and conversation after the service.
