Vision Sunday 2026
“What We’ve Been Given Is Not Just for Us”
In April 2026 our Vicar, Revd Graham Hunter, helped us reflect on God’s vision and purpose for our church in the season ahead…
On Vision Sunday, we reflected on two powerful resurrection stories: the road to Emmaus (Luke 24) and the birth of the church at Pentecost (Acts 2). In both accounts, something is received—and then immediately shared.
The Emmaus disciples encounter the risen Jesus in the breaking of bread. Their disappointment turns to joy, their confusion to clarity, and instead of continuing away from Jerusalem, they turn around and run back to tell others. In Acts 2, Peter proclaims the good news of Jesus, and thousands respond. He declares: “The promise is for you… and your children… and for all who are far off.”
That phrase captures the heart of our vision this year. What we have received in Christ—forgiveness, hope, peace, new life, the Holy Spirit—is not meant to stop with us. We are not the end point of God’s generosity. We are the means by which it reaches others.
We considered vision in four layers.
Gospel Vision reminds us of God’s eternal purpose: reconciling the world to himself through Jesus Christ. Changed lives reveal God’s glory.
Big Vision recognises the moment we are living in. While church attendance has declined in many places, there is also a growing openness—especially among younger generations—to spirituality, meaning, and faith. We are not speaking into a closed culture, but a searching one.
Local Vision asks what this means for us in Hoxton. We long to be a beacon of hope: a church where people are welcomed as they are and transformed by God’s grace. That means worshipping God, making disciples, sharing Jesus, and serving our neighbourhood. It means being outward-looking, hospitable, prayerful, and ready to adapt for the sake of mission.
Seasonal Vision recognises the year ahead. In 2026 we celebrate 200 years of this church building. Generations before us prayed, gave, and sacrificed so that we could inherit this place. Now it is our turn to think beyond ourselves and invest in those who will come after us.
The challenge is simple: if this message truly matters, what part will we play?
For some, that means prayer. For others, serving. For others, inviting someone to church or Alpha. For all of us, it means offering ourselves afresh to God’s mission.
The promise is for us. And for those still far off.
Let’s receive it—and pass it on.
