Men’s Breakfast Report

Revd Graham Hunter reflects on last week’s men’s breakfast.

On a glorious sunny Saturday morning in March, 30 men gathered at our church to enjoy a breakfast together. Organised by Ali Sadek along with members of the Organising for Growth ‘engagement’ team and other men in the church, this was an opportunity to ‘re-gather’ after the isolation of the past two years.

We had a particular focus on creating a hospitable space for some of the local asylum seekers and youth who play football on Wednesdays to come and build new friendships with a wide range of other men from the church. Indeed, there were (young) men from 14 to (older) men of 70+.

One of the youth, Alessio, worked alongside professional chef Terry to prepare an amazing cooked breakfast, complete with ‘hipster’ smashed avocado on sourdough with poached eggs and halloumi, but also more traditional bacon, sausages and eggs.

Our guest speak was Jesse Wilson, founder and pioneer of ‘fruit-beer’ company Jubel. Jesse shared the story of founding and developing the company - and shared the highs and lows of running a business. It was particularly powerful to hear him speak of how his faith has affected him in business. He commented on how he has dealt with injustice and forgiveness, as well as how to get business in proportion as a Christian: not letting it become an ‘idol’, but also not being ‘idle’.
